Organics: A Year In Review

Organic pears and apples experienced growth in the last year, bolstering both categories. Superfresh Growers® takes looks into each category, highlighting where apples and pears succeeded in the previous 52 weeks.

Organic apples experienced 5% national sales growth. Gala led the charge, representing 34% of all organic apple sales. Gala was followed by Honeycrisp, Fuji, Granny Smith, and Pink Lady® apples. Winter promotions helped the organic movement, and the spring and summer had missed promotion opportunities.

Organic pears fared even better, with a national sales growth of 7%. Bartlett was king of organic pears, representing 47.4% of all organic pear sales at a whopping $14.8 million. Anjou and Bosc round out the core three organic pear varieties. Combined, these three represent 89.5% of all organic pear sales.

The new apple and pear crop season will begin in August, with Organic Gala apples and Organic Bartlett and Starkrimson pears. Contact your Superfresh Growers representative to set up your fall organic programs now.
