Superfresh Growers Take First Place At 33rd Annual Gap2Gap Race

June 5, 2017

In a neck to neck race that came down to the final stretch, Superfresh Growers have taken home the Corporate Team Division Gap2Gap trophy for the 8th time in the past nine years. Defeating their new rivals from Heritage University by 24 seconds, Ryan Nesbitt, Rick Perez, Brian Hake, and Mark Holtzinger finished the five-leg relay race with a final time of 2:39:41.

The Gap2Gap is a relay race in Yakima, WA consisting of a 5K trail run, an 18 mile road bike route (1018' elevation gain), 8 mile mountain bike course, a 3 mile kayak water course, and a final 5K run. "It's a grueling race that demands your top performance," according to Mark Holtzinger, a competitor for the last two decades. "The competition has been stiff in all divisions these last few years, so there's no room for mistakes." he continued.

While competition is always fierce, Ryan Nesbitt looks forward to the Gap2Gap each year because it's a chance to work together with coworkers to cross the finish line. "It's a relay race, so you have to trust in your teammates and they're relying on you just as much. One person can't do it alone, it takes a team working together and giving it their all. We have an amazing group of people both on and off the field at Domex Superfresh Growers and the Gap2Gap brings out the best of us."

When asked which memory from the event stood out to him the most, Nesbitt laughed and said, "It wasn't holding the trophy up on the podium or passing my competitors on the mountain bike... it was watching Brian Hake rounding the last corner of the 5K and giving it his all to stay in front of the 2nd place team. Watching him suffer with his competition breathing down his neck made all of the runs we go on together at lunch mean even more to me in that moment."

Below are the final times for each member of the Superfresh Team. Full results from the race can be found online by clicking here.
